What is sublimation printing and how does it work?
Sublimation printing uses heat and pressure to turn special dye into a gas that bonds with the surface of a product. The design is printed on transfer paper first, then pressed onto polyester fabric or a polymer-coated item. The dye becomes part of the surface, so it does not peel or crack.
- Sublimation turns solid dye into gas using heat and pressure.
- The dye bonds with polyester or polymer coatings, not just sitting on top.
- It works best on white or light-colored polyester and coated items.
- It can print full-color, edge-to-edge designs with no feel to the touch.
- It does not work well on cotton or dark colors.
What the word means
Sublimation is a science term. It describes a solid turning straight into a gas without becoming a liquid first. Dye sublimation uses that effect. Special dyes are heated until they turn into gas, then they soak into a surface and turn solid again.
So "dye sublimation" simply means using sublimation dye to color a product.
How the process works
- Print the design. A printer uses sublimation ink to print a mirror image of the artwork on transfer paper.
- Position the paper. The paper is placed face down on the product, or wrapped around it.
- Apply heat and pressure. A heat press or oven holds the paper in place at high heat, typically for a minute or several minutes depending on the item.
- Dye bonds. The dye turns to gas. The pores of the polyester fibers or the polymer coating open up and take it in.
- Cool and finish. As the item cools, the pores close and trap the dye inside.
Because the color goes into the surface, the print has no raised layer. You usually can't feel it, and it does not peel or crack the way a sticker or heavy ink can.
What it works on
Sublimation needs a surface that can accept the dye. That means:
- Polyester fabric, such as performance shirts, flags, banners and tote bags
- Polymer-coated hard goods, such as mugs, drink tumblers, coasters, phone cases and mouse pads
It works best on white or light-colored items. Sublimation dye is see-through, so it can't cover a dark color. Cotton and other natural fibers do not hold the dye well, and the print can fade or wash out. For cotton, other methods such as screen print or direct-to-garment are a better fit.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Full-color designs, including photos and gradients
- Edge-to-edge or all-over prints on fabric
- A soft feel on shirts, since the ink does not sit on top
- Durable color that holds up to washing and daily use
Limits
- Needs polyester or a special coating
- Does not print white
- Color on the final product can differ a little from your screen, so send PMS colors if an exact match matters
Common mistakes
- Ordering on a dark or cotton item. The design will look dull or may not take at all.
- Sending a low-resolution logo. Fine detail looks soft. Send vector art when you can.
- Expecting white ink. If your logo has white, the white is the color of the product itself.
Each product page lists the imprint methods it offers, so you can check whether sublimation is available before you order.

How does sublimation work?
A printer puts sublimation dye on transfer paper. A heat press then warms the paper against the product. The dye turns into gas, enters polyester fibers or a polymer coating, and locks in as it cools.
What does dye sublimation mean?
It means coloring a product with dye that changes from solid to gas under heat, skipping the liquid stage. The gas bonds with the surface, so the color becomes part of the item.
Is sublimation printing the same as screen printing?
No. Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil, one color at a time, and the ink sits on top. Sublimation bonds dye into the surface and handles full-color artwork in one pass.
Can you sublimate on cotton or dark shirts?
Not well. The dye needs polyester or a coating to bond with, and it is see-through, so it can't cover dark colors. Choose polyester in a light color, or pick another imprint method for cotton.
